TO-4E Turbo - Quick Access:
Itemized List
1st of all, thanks to Eric R [Atlanta, GA] for providing the motivation, & HK$ sport turbo kit to get this phase in OldSchool Supra's life going. Some downpipe fitment issues, as well as turbo failure were worked out, & I do not regret having done business with Eric.
Anyway, on to the parts list...so, several of the items have nothing to do with a turbo transplant, ey. This is a natural extension of both maintenance, & modification- taking advantage of the elbow room granted by ancilliary component removal. Besides convenience, clearing the way toward the engine offers a clearer view of many of the other hoses, pipes, gaskets, etc...a perfect time to replace normally hidden leaky/old/petrified items. Turbo heat is a killer!
60-trim compressor map.
This turbo was initially described to me as the "HK$ full turbine upgrade" with a "60-1 compressor wheel." Well, upon checking the '97-'98 HKS catalog, I did find a TO-4E listed, but the only compressor available was the 57-trim, with an AR on the exhaust side of 0.70- no other information was listed. Also, I was informed that for TO-4 designations using 60 in the spec, the 60-1 is a TO-4B wheel, while the "60-trim" is the proper wheel designation for the TO-4E.
On the exhaust-side, a P-trim turbine was quoted, while AR was identified by the stamping inside the housing. 0.70 for the turbine housing, & 0.60 for the compressor housing.
Four months after installation, the center cartridge seals gave way. Billowing smoke out of the tailpipe ensued. Sent to Innovative Turbo Systems [ITS], the unit was identified as compressor: 60-trim/0.60AR; turbine: P-trim/0.70AR. Their words "...a turbo of mediocre quality." Sounded about right.
ITS performed a reconstruction of the turbo that was tantamount to a complete replacement, the only original parts were the compressor, & wheels. I must acknowledge Jake R of SocAL for assisting me in getting the turbo attended to. Jake does crazy mods worthy of professional recognition, so it was my pleasure to have him as an intermediary.

An HK$ cast clone, made by Dynamic AutoSports.
This unit is said to be more resistant to cracking, like the original HK$ manifolds were notable for.

The turbo's done, but that's about it. Oil, & coolant lines are being reworked, while downpipe will be created once
the engine returns to the engine bay. Multiple projects simultaneously boils down to downtime, so it'll be awhile before
this thing spools up for the 1st time. The wastegate is the HK$ 40mm standard unit. No boost creep, even at
25psi.

Note the 7M-GE oil filter mount setup.
A sandwich plate will go there directly to a remote oil filter, & a Setrab oil cooler.
View of fitment gripe #1. I call it the bitch nut, LOL. The only nut I could find that would fit was that ugly
rusted piece of shi+ you see nestled next to the exhaust runner. All the other nuts were new Toyota.
Fitment gripe #2 was the original downpipe. A veritable abortion of a pipe. Shame on HK$ for such a shi++y component.
I'll get pics of the downpipe up at some point.
